The 45th release from Dramfool is a 12 year old Lochindaal distilled in 2009 and matured in a first fill bourbon barrel yielding 212 bottles at cask strength of 62.0%.
Only 500 casks of Lochindaal were filled by Bruichladdich from 2 short distillation runs in 2007 and 2009, making this spirit rare as hen’s teeth!
Tasting notes by Jim McEwan
Colour - Lovely deep Marigold Yellow.
Body - Muscular mellow and full of the joys of Islay’s character.
Nose - Brilliant opening on marine/smouldering Heather fires with a hint of Spring woodlands; Daffodils, snowdrops and Fern all encapsulated in a halo of peat smoke and mellow oak. Pure magic! It’s Islay in the glass and I would have loved to have made whisky in the old Distillery but it was not to be so I created this spirit based upon what I learned from my old friend Roderick McLeod who claimed to have tasted it. After having consumed 2 large shots, he told me the magic recipe; “Jim, it was a good dram and I liked it a lot!” That was it, no further info, so here is my version of what I thought it would have tasted like. A good peaty dram, enjoy and thank Roderick for his massive contribution! It’s a rare spirit and I hope the Angels and Roderick enjoy their share!
Palate - Pure Islay in every way, it’s wonderful and rare just like the late Roderick McLeod!!
