The 40th release from Dramfool is a very special bottling of long lost grain distillery Carsebridge. The whisky was matured in a bourbon hogshead for 44 years yielding only 122 bottles at cask strength of 41.5%. An increasingly rare chance to buy a piece of Scotch Whisky history. Carsebridge was closed in 1983 and subsequently dismantled - a “ghost” distillery.
Hogshead filled on 12/03/1976 and bottled on 02/10/2020.
Tasting notes by Jim McEwan
Colour - Beautiful Mellow Yellow.
Body - Smooth as glass
Aromas & Flavours - Incredibly fresh for a spirit of this age. It possesses a feline charm that is unique to older grain spirits, and this one is a classic.
It opens on oak syrup with a twist of honey & lemon leading onto sun dried barley that has been stored in the grain loft throughout the year. Light floral Riverside notes of Primrose, Lily and Marigolds drift by serenely. It’s in beautiful condition for its age. The cask has played its part superbly providing the strength, structure and character to make this spirit the beauty that it is.
It’s an approachable warm deep spirit that proves beyond doubt how important the quality of the cask has been to nurture the spirit, yet never dominates.
Very few people have ever enjoyed grain whiskies. As a former blender Carsebridge was always a go-to grain, it brought a beautiful smoothness to the overall composition of many well-known blends.
At this age it’s an absolute treasure.
When will we see its like again!
